An exhibition of contemporary art by Irish artist John Nolan opened on the 1st of September 2005, 6pm - 8pm at LIVING, 36/37 South William Street, Dublin 2. After his successful show in Germany, John returns to Ireland with a solo show of new work in this modern furniture showroom. Johns vibrant work marries well with the interior decor and furnishings of one of Dublins top furniture stores.
John Nolan was born in 1958, in Dublin, Ireland. His exuberant modern figurative style combines bold outlines with bright exotic colours. His interpretation of various motifs (Fish, Landscape, Flowers, Birds, Human Figure, Still Life, Trees) transmits a positive upbeat feeling to his viewers.
Along side this exploration John has been developing his abstract style, for many years. In the abstract work he experiments with colour through gestural brushstrokes. There is no discernable subject matter, he has abandoned the motifs of his modern figurative work and focuses on pure colour and composition. Basically it is the artist, the canvas, the colour and the brush. His palette is still as vibrant as ever, using exuberant and exotic colours. He starts a painting with no definite preconceptions but simply an impulse, a subliminal thought about colour, space or form. He pushes beyond realism to build images that have power and urgency. It is a journey attempting to understand himself and existence, to give through his painting definition to the essence of being in the universe. His paintings are charged with masses of energy which cause the surface to move in vibrant harmony. Whatever inner pulse guides his work dictates his longing for colour and forms, and explores his imagination and inner experience.
John Nolan is one of the orginal Premiere Portfolio Artists at absolutearts.com with his activity on the site going back to June 2001. View more of his art at: http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/j/johnnie/.
