Four Works by Joyce Bailey will be featured at the Mountain Shadow Gallery in Tucson, Arizona during the month of September, 2005. Bailey's four oil paintings--Calabacita (60" W X 48" H), Roman Candles (60" W X 48" H), Seventeenth Century (48" W X 60" H) and Merengue (60" W X 48" H) in the exhibition. The Gallery is located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountain Range in "El Cortijo" Gallery Row. Technically, Bailey pushes oil glazing to a new level to achieve the luminosity of tropical colors; her brushstrokes sweep through the forms suggesting subtle breezes or dance movements. The artist wants the observer to be involved in the paintings--the beauty, the formal surprises, the color language and the mystery.
Academically Joyce Bailey's studies included studio art, history of art, anthropology, archaeology and arts administration with degrees from:Yale University (MPhil., Ph.D), Tulane University(M.A.), Youngstown University with study courses at the Butler Institute of American art (B.A. cum laude). and a 2 year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Harvard University.
Bailey has taught studio and art history at, among others, Southern Connecticut State University, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, Amherst College, University of Massachusetts, and Hampshire College. She was also Curator of the Berney-Bailey collection (a portion "Mexican Graphics") was sold at Christie's Auction 7788 (New York)
