Maryland Art Place (MAP) is proud to announce a call for proposals for the Fourth Annual Curator’s Incubator exhibition competition. This program was developed to encourage diversity and mentor emerging curators (with limited or no previous curatorial experience) from the mid-Atlantic region, while offering a flash-point look at contemporary art in our community.
This year, for the first time, potential curators are invited to submit proposals during a simplified two phase application process. During the first phase, interested candidates will submit brief descriptions of their proposed exhibitions for a competitive review process. These proposals must be postmarked and mailed or hand delivered to MAP (8 Market Place, Suite 100, Baltimore, MD 21202) by October 22, 2005. A small number of curatorial semi-finalists will be selected, with the intention of fine tuning their proposals over a two month period in early 2006 during the second phase, assisted by MAP’s staff and area curators. Refined proposal packets prepared by these semi-finalists (comprised of either individual curators or curatorial teams) will be eligible for the final competitive review during the spring of 2006, with a postmark deadline of February 25, 2006.
Both stages of the exhibition proposal packets will be juried by MAP's Programming Advisory Committee (PAC), a group comprised of professional artists and arts educators from the region, committed to expanding exhibition opportunities at MAP by recommending specific exhibitions and artists to MAP’s staff and board.
DIRECTIONS FOR PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS:
Phase 1: Proposals must be postmarked no later than October 22, 2005. Applicants at this stage of the process should submit the following documents for consideration to MAP, CURATOR’S INCUBATOR 2006, 8 Market Place, Suite 100, Baltimore, MD 21202:
1) A brief one page letter from the curator/curatorial team outlining the central ideas for the proposed exhibition (please note that curators should not include their own artwork in the exhibition proposal.)
2) A list of names and contact information for each artist being considered for the proposed exhibition.
3) Resumes for each curatorial candidate, including any background relevant to this particular exhibition.
4) A 3”x5” index card with the curator(s) contact information: home/work/mobile phones, mailing address, email, website(s)
5) A self-addressed stamped postcard for each applicant so that we may confirm the receipt of your application.
Phase 2: Proposals of selected semi-finalists must be postmarked by February 25, 2006. Only those curators whose applications were recommended by the PAC for selection during Phase 1 will be invited to submit more extensive proposals during the Phase 2 stage of proposal review. These successful applicants will be mentored during the development of their Phase 2 exhibition proposal preparation, which will be reviewed during the early spring of 2006. Between one and three curators/curatorial teams will have their exhibitions selected during this final stage of the review process. The curators selected by the PAC and MAP staff at the conclusion of the Phase 2 jury process will continue to be mentored during the final development stages of their exhibition(s), scheduled to be on view at MAP from September 5 until October 14, 2006.
