Four is pleased to present The Doubloon, a solo show by American
artist Xylor Jane. Jane plans to secret herself in the gallery for 5 days to make
something site-specific. "That's how I like to work," she says. "With
the architecture of the space I work in, making my math coexist with
the math that's already there."
Each work begins with a set of arbitrary rules, often involving a
Fibonacci sequence, that determine how the grid will transform the
wall into a hypnotic optical experience, that simultaneously expands
and shrinks, whereby the image radiates outward from the center, Jane
uncovers the unpredictable pattern produced by an apparently logical
sequence making use of the constraints imposed by measurement.
Xylor Jane lives and works in both San Francisco and Brooklyn, New
York. She received a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art
Institute. She has had several solo exhibitions in the Bay Area at
galleries including Jack Hanley Gallery, The LAB, Gallery 16 and The
Luggage Store and solo shows in New York at Canada Gallery and Rare
Gallery. Jane's work has also been included in group shows at
Ricco/Maresca Gallery in New York and Gallery Joe in Philadelphia. She
is represented by Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco.
Forthcoming exhibition: Borderline, 15 December – 30 January 2006.
