The University Museum and Art Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition
by Hong Kong scientist-artist Norman W. M. Ko. This exhibition features Ko's
sculptural and installation works of the past twenty-five years, including
marble sculptures in classical style; conceptual and abstract works in stone
and metal; intallations of 2,000 model aeroplanes; and sketches and
photographic records of his outdoor works.
A representative figure in contemporary Hong Kong sculpture, Ko is a founder
member of the Hong Kong Sculptors Association, alongside veteran artists
Cheung Yee and Van Lau in 1982, the first local group of its kind. Around 80
examples of his work are on view in Hong Kong as public art installations.
Ko has received many awards for sculpture design and public art since the
1980s.
Ko's art journey began with a childhood interest in model aeroplanes,
constituting a theme of 'flight' in both his creative work and his career as
a professor of mechanical engineering, specialising in fluid dynamics and
aeroacoustics. Though his art ideas are inspired by form and volume, Ko
works to impart his vision of life and humanism. The exhibits illustrate his
mastery of both science and art which share the goal of transforming
abstract ideas into intelligible concepts.
