"Sukey Bryan:  Water Marks (painting)"
2006-01-02 until 2006-01-30
Hang Art
San Francisco, CA, USA United States of America

Hang Art in San Francisco during January 2006, exhibits works by Sukey Bryan in a show of paintings entitled Water Marks. A public reception will be held on January 5th, 2006 from 6 to 8pm. HANG ART is fresh art. They scour the San Francisco Bay Area to find exceptional artists--giving you access to a wide variety of the best quality original artwork being produced today. In 1993, Bryan received a National Endowment for the Arts Artist Fellowship and used the funds to photograph land and seascapes in Iceland, Scotland and Norway. This research has led her to an ongoing series of paintings exploring the interaction of natural elements propelled by tidal, climactic, volcanic, and tectonic forces.

With her elemental images of fire and water, Sukey Bryan describes the spectacular transfer of energy that governs all terrestrial events. Bryan's work celebrates the risk of destruction and the possibility of renewal afforded by nature -- in her paintings, we encounter order in the midst of swirling chaos. By paring away details so that the familiar becomes strange and beautiful, Bryan imparts some of the awe and wonder of the natural world.

Sukey Bryan received her bachelor's degree from Yale University and her master's degree from the Maryland Institute's College of Art. Bryan has exhibited her work at galleries and non-profit spaces for the past decade, and has been reviewed in Art in America, the Washington Review, and the Baltimore Sun.
