"MA in Photography: Historic and Contemporary"
2006-01-06 until 2006-09-01
Sotheby’s Institute of Art
London, , UK United Kingdom

Sotheby’s Institute of Art – London is pleased to announce a new and innovative masters programme in historic and contemporary photography, starting in September 2006. The MA in Photography: Historic and Contemporary, offered by one of the leading postgraduate institutions, Sotheby’s Institute of Art - London, taps into the current shift in the way photography is received and understood. It gives students the vital skills needed in appreciating and analysing photography in terms of intention, production, encounter and interpretation. It prepares them for a career in the artworld with a specialisation in the most dynamic and prolific of mediums.

As the only course in the United Kingdom to offer a postgraduate qualification in the history of photography, the course will also allow students a full investigation of the medium beyond the art gallery.

The course will look at the medium’s role in a variety of social and cultural contexts including photojournalism, documentary practice, vernacular environments and fashion. Through a thorough analysis of modernist practice and striking postmodern strategies, photography, in all its numerous guises, will be rigorously investigated and examined. From exquisite nineteenth century daguerreotypes to conceptual art’s use of the banal and ’artless’ snapshot, the course will consider the full range of ways in which artists engage with photography to make art.

The MA in Photography: Historic and Contemporary is a unique opportunity which offers students a chance to study in a way that is not available in any other university in the UK. Its commitment to a medium allows a rigour and thoroughness which is exemplary and comes at a time when the demand for professionals with specialist knowledge is photography is growing.

Faculty on this course include Susan Bright, author of just published book, “Art Photography Now” which presents the work of eighty of the most important and best-loved artist-photographers in the world today. Artists such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Sophie Calle, Wolfgang Tillmans, Nan Goldin, Martin Parr, Allan Sekula, Boris Mikhailov, Sam Taylor-Wood, Nez van Lamsweerde and many more are featured.
