"Peter Mollenkof: Large Drawings"
2006-01-20 until 2006-02-25
E. Gordon Gallery
Cleveland, OH, USA United States of America

e. gordon gallery is pleased to exhibit the latest showcase of artwork from Pennsylvania based artist, Peter Mollenkof  s solo exhibitions throughout New York, Tokyo, and Pennsylvania, and his latest exhibition marks his first solo exhibition in Cleveland. A current instructor of studio art at Messiah College and a former art critic for Art in America (1994 – 1997) and Artnews (1987-89), Mollenkof’s work showcases his skills in his traditional media of colored pencil and graphite on paper. The results are bold shapes done in meticulous detail that engage the viewer with their unique beauty.

Peter Mollenkof’s drawings on paper are delicately rendered forms that hover in the realm of reality yet are distinctly unreal. Drawn as three dimensional forms floating in ambiguous space, their indeterminate mysterious nature invites study and pondering. Based on natural forms the composite shapes become unnatural through human ingenuity. The tension between naturalness and unnaturalness of things is a recurring theme in these beautiful and laborious drawings.

At first encounter, shapes are perceived to be suspended by artful suggestion. Aroused to examine more closely the familiar yet mysterious images, the viewer becomes aware of the artist’s total mastery of his medium revealed in the carefully executed “million strokes” of the pencil incorporated into each segment of his work. The Mollenkof exhibition is of particular interest to admirers of the minimalist aesthetic as well as those who seek to add master drawings to their collections. This is an awe-inspiring and unforgettable show of work that we are pleased and honored to present.

e. gordon gallery was established in August 2004 by director Elizabeth Davis. A graduate of Duke University, Davis wanted to create a space in Cleveland that mixed young and experienced artists.  e. gordon gallery strives to always devote space to showcase young emerging artists and allow them to grow as artists within the community.  Alongside young artists, the gallery is dedicated to showing established Cleveland area and national artists.  Located in the lower level of the 2026 Gallery Building, e. gordon gallery sits within the heart of Little Italy’s gallery district on Murray Hill Rd.  The renovated schoolhouse is also the home to many nationally established galleries and artist studios.  The gallery is minutes away from many other Cleveland cultural institutions, including:The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Institute of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Severance Hall, and many others.
