Indepth Arts News:

"Deur: Sandra Hanekom"
2006-01-19 until 2006-02-03
gordart Gallery
Johannesburg, , ZA South Africa

gordart Gallery is very pleased to announce a new space opening for artists on the same premises as their Melville, Johnannesburg Gallery. For the launch of the space there is planned a great opening party and with a phenomenal exhibition of exquisite work by Cape - based artist Sandra Hanekom - titled "Deur". The word "deur" in Afrikaans has two primary meanings - a physical "door" and "through". It is the idea of "living through" - both for the person's depicted life and for Hanekom reanimating, reactuating and re-examining a life.

Hanekom's portraits in pencil and pinpricks depict Female historical figures, some great, some obscure; their life-stories have influenced the way Hanekom relates to the world and her perception of herself. The exhibition is as much documentation of fame and infamy as a reflection. From Frida Khalo to Queen Victoria and to south Africa's own black/white/coloured girl Sandra Laing.

gordart Gallery's new 6 x 4m space is ideal for the showing of one work, three works, a video projection, a performance or a large number of small works. Because it is not a huge intimidating space and because the costs of showing are considerably less than the main space, it is far more accessible to younger, emerging artists or those who may not yet have the body of work suitable for a major solo show. It is also by definition a space far more suited to experimental and risky work. Without even trying to canvas new artists, the space is already virtually booked up for this entire year.

It is hoped that this will be a springboard for young emergent artists as well as those from out of town (the 2nd show is from Paris featuring the work of Laure Djourado) to get a foot into the door of exhibiting. They are also actively seeking and in conversation with sponsors to sponsor the space for a year at a time, or for a 3 month period or in any other way that will make the experience cheaper for artists to show.
