Indepth Arts News: "Encounter with Nature: Aerated Abstraction - Joyce Waddell Bailey" 2006-02-02 until 2006-03-02 Botero Galleries, Inc. / Kennedy Studio Gallery Marco Island, FL, USA United States of America
The concept of "Aerated Abstraction" is elucidated in a brochure for the exhibition:
"Aerated Abstractions," refers to way the artist
attacks her subjects in preparation for painting and the technical rendering of the compositions.
The subjects are initially explored with sketches
in various media, photographs, posing mirror images, using
multiple scales and preserving pieces of the actual subject
in her Studio.
The techniques employed in the execution of the paintings (ranging in size from 24" X 24" to 60" X 96"),
include: multiple -layered glazing with organic pigments, unusual dry brushing,
scrubbing, sanding, taping, subtractive linear delineation
and extensive under- and over-painting. These methods, used
over heavily primed canvases that give a different dimension to
the surfaces--similar to a topographic map.
The result of this constant formal revision and "working of the paint" give
the works a quality of "Aerated Abstractions."
