This exhibition - I Close My Eyes So That I Can by Ione Citrin - at Arts Visalia, is a showing of mixed media creations in a dramatic display of wall and freestanding pieces. The tone of this exhibit is definitely native/tribal of no particular ethnicity, but a broad generalization. There are wall hung and free standing sculptures in this exhibit. Most of them are created from dried flowers/leaves/handmade paper, fabric, metal, found objects, etc., and all were initiated from “dreams” and “visions”.
Five pieces in this exhibit are award winners on their own merit. “Shahrzad” is a Gold Medal Winner in a 2003 art competition sponsored by Neilson Bainbridge Co. “Ramses” was selected out of 33,000 entries as a finalist in the Experimental category of The Artist Magazine’s 2004 Annual Competition. “The Midwife” won 1st place in Second City Art Council’s “Black History” month exhibition,“Happy Birthday” won both the coveted Gambino Award of Excellence in the Pomona Valley Art Assn. “22nd Annual Juried Show, and Honorable Mention in the Long Beach Art Assn.’s “3-D Sculpture Competition - 2003,“Sign of the Cross” was featured on the cover of “Art Calendar’s” December, 2003 issue, “The Bath” won the “Serendipity Award” & “Yes, It Is Me” won an Honorable Mention in the Pomona Valley Art Assn. 24th Annual Juried Show.
