Indepth Arts News: "Call for Artists: Art and Nature Walk The Legend" 2006-02-08 until 2006-03-01 Stichting Natuurkunst Drenthe Sleen, , NL Netherlands
Foundation Natureart Drenthe (Stichting Natuurkunst Drenthe – www.natuurkunstdrenthe.nl) is organising’, after ‘Art and Nature Walk The Legend’- 2005, a second event in 2006 - 'Art and Nature Walk' Still Water. Artists are inspired by the turbulent history of the Orangecanal (Oranjekanaal). The canal runs over about 40 kilometres from Smilde tot Klazienaveen. Built all by hand from 1852 – 1860. Misfortune, personal accidents, collapsing of some parts, heavy sand in stead of soft peat, low water level, no connection with the other waterways and other misseries made the building of this canal to a economic disaster.
The owners never made good money and also the transportation of peat from the bogs was not a success. Just after world-war two it became property of the Dutch government and at the moment the waterway is blocked by bridges and dams so there is no longer an open connection. It is only used for leisure activities like angling, canoes etc.
Location of the artworks is the forest next to the canal and belongs to the small village Schoonoord. A new walking trail of about 4 kilometres will be made connected with the canal itself. So one or two artists have the opportunity to work with the canal itself. The project is also connected with open air museum ‘Ellert and Brammert’ ( see The Legend – 2005).
