"Call for Artists: Grants for Local Art Projects"
2006-02-10 until 2006-03-01
Pro Helvetia Liaison Office South Africa
Cape Town, , ZA South Africa

The Arts Council of Switzerland is inviting applications for grants for local art projects involving regional exchange between the SADC countries. Application deadline for funding for new projects is on 1 March 2006. Pro Helvetia is the Arts Council of Switzerland. Pro Helvetia Liaison Office South Africa (PHLOSA) acts as a funding body, advisor and coordinator of projects in any of the art disciplines in Southern Africa and Switzerland. In particular it encourages the exchange between Switzerland and Southern Africa, as well as regional exchange between countries within the SADC region.

The Pro Helvetia Liasion Office South Africa has the mandate to support cultural exchange between Switzerland and Southern Africa for professional art practitioners in all art disciplines.

Since May 1999, PHLOSA was mandated to manage additional funding from the Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation (SDC), which operates from Pretoria. The collaboration between the two Swiss bodies allows for a broader cultural support.

In December 2004, SDC and PHLOSA signed a new regional mandate agreement for 2005 - 2007 for local art projects in South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola and Botswana and for projects that involve more than one of these Southern African countries.

SDC's objectives and guiding principles for this regional mandate agreement are to contribute to the better integration of the Southern African society, and to the increased acceptance of its diversity. It particularly supports the development of role models in the field of arts and culture.

In pursuing these objectives, PHLOSA supports projects in the following categories:

1. Projects that build awareness using the arts
2. Projects that have synergies with existing PHLOSA (exchange) projects
3. Projects that develop new syntheses out of modernity and tradition
4. Projects that promote opportunities for cultural differentiation
5. Projects that develop skills in arts administration to build local capacities

Application deadline for projects taking place between July 2006 and July 2007 is 1 March 2006. Application forms can be obtained from PHLOSA or downloaded from our website: www.pro-helvetia.ch/capetown
