Buzzer Thirty is pleased to announce Propositions of Desire: Contours of Erotic Ambiguity, an exhibition by Tokoha Matsuda. The exhibition will be held at the gallery at Buzzer Thirty, 38-01 23rd Avenue, in the heart of Astoria, and is open to the public. Propositions of Desire will run February 11 March 8, 2006. Tokoha Matsuda received her MFA from Hunter College, the City University of New York, after studying at the Art Students League of New York and earning a BA in studio art at Hunter. She also has a BA in behavioral science from Hokkaido University in Japan.
In my most recent project, Propositions of Desire: Contours of Erotic Ambiguity, I explore the life-death-sex relationship with food as the dominant element. I have a long-held interest in "life and death," of which sex/eroticism is an extension for me. My feminist point of view is also reflected. Foods are basic to life, as one living thing dies to sustain another.
I use fishes, mollusks, meat, animal parts and viscera as death images, but they also evince in me a strong sensuality. In my photo-etchings, I superimpose raw food ingredients and sexual organs or pornographic images; and in digital prints, I examine eroticism in foods. Conflicting sensations such as amusement, beauty or disgust are evoked, as I embrace ambivalence and schizophrenic values within myself and my art.
