What I Am is an exhibition of the disparate disciplines of photography and textiles. Christopher Young (photography) & Elisa Markes-Young (Textiles) have collaborated to produce a new body of work that is shown at Breadbox in Northbridge. The works deal with identity – a key factor in both artist's practice. Fresh, unique work has come from the creative friction of responding to each others ideas.
The patterns that Elisa creates with her textiles tell stories of individual and cultural marginalisation. She also confronts the issues of influence, and social and environmental conditions.
Chris's photographs deal with his self-perceived lack of tangible identity and his struggle to establish or discover some form of self.
He examines his emotional responses to external stimuli, and examines the origins of social conditioning in regards to emotion.
The search across the broad spectrum of identifiable elements is constant.
