"The Seven Deadly Sins: A Group Exhibition"
2006-02-18 until 2006-03-25
Latcham Gallery
Stouffville, ON, CA Canada

The Latcham Gallery, Stouffville Ontario Canada is pleased to present a group exhibition “The Seven Deadly Sins” February 18 through March 25, 2006. Curated by Maura Broadhurst and inspired by the medieval concept of the Seven Deadly Sins, this exhibition will look at the concept through the images of seven new pieces of contemporary art. Artists in the exhibition are John Deal “Gluttony”, David Hannan “Lust”, Fiona Kinsella “Sloth, Lynne McIlvride Evans “Pride”, Tina Newlove “Anger”, Frederica Tomas “Greed”, and WeSee Inc. (Roy Kohn & Kate Vasyliw) “Envy”. These artists were invited to participate due to the sensibility of their work and the relevance of this theme to their overall body of work. The exhibition will include paintings, sculpture, mixed media, photography, prints and installation work.

Through their artwork these artists will examine the seven deadly sins within a contemporary context, questioning the existence of today’s moral code.

Although never specifically mentioned in the Bible, the concept of sin - doing wrong against God’s will - is undoubtedly associated with the Christian religion and it is generally accepted that Pope Gregory the Great outlined these seven sins in the sixth century. There are many ways in which this idea of a moral code also exists in secular life and is in fact present in other religions under different frameworks. Today, at a time when reality TV is the norm and celebrities from movie stars to political figures live under the spotlight of the public’s camera, people’s morality is under intense scrutiny and our understanding of what is right and wrong is shifting and blurring.

Expect a thought provoking experience and a new look at an old subject.

The Latcham Gallery gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ontario Arts Council for this project.
