Artio Gallery and Photo Studio presents "The Darkroom: Photographs by Jurgen Pape and Janet Thomas" during the month of March, 2006. The two photographers with Granville ties will show works from the last year. Thomas' work in the exhibition is portraiture from her travels to Honduras last summer. In contrast to Thomas' soft and organic moods, Pape's architectural photos are very graphic. The exhibition runs until April with an opening on Friday, March 10th.
Janet Thomas states, "I have always wanted to be an artist…a painter really. And I did try, I tried so hard. Finally I realized that I am just not very good at painting. Somewhere along the way I stumbled into photography. It was almost an accident. I was practically forced into the title by circumstance. The idea of being a professional photographer was daunting to me at the time. Now I look back and I realize I have always been a photographer, always been an artist."
The exhibition is Thomas' first gallery show. Janet Thomas is a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com. View more of her work at: http://www.absolutearts.com/janetlthomas/.
"The immediately striking aspect of Jurgen Pape's work is the alternative perspective from which the viewer sees the urban landscape. In their reflection, familiar forms present themselves in an new and surprising way", comments Christian J. Faur who curated an exhibition of Pape's work at the Ohio Art League in 2002.
