Indepth Arts News: "New Works by Noria Mabasa" 2006-03-22 until 2006-04-22 Bell-Roberts Art Gallery Cape Town, , ZA South Africa
Celebrated Venda artist, Noria Mabasa, exhibits new works in clay at the Bell-Roberts Contemporary Gallery from March 22 through April 22, 2006. Her sculpted clay figures and functional sculpture pots will be exhibited along with selected works by some of her students. The themes of these works are rooted in Venda mythology and combine female bodies and faces with traditional pot forms.
Ms. Mabasa runs an art school in Venda from where she instructs her students in the dying art of clay-pot and sculpture making. She started working in clay in 1974 and, motivated by a dream, two years later became the first Venda woman to work in wood. She has exhibited both locally and abroad.
Together with Claudette Schreuders, Ms Mabasa was commissioned to create a sculpture for the recently opened Nobel Square at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Ms Mabasa is a recipient of the prestigious “Silver Level of the Order of the Baobab”, awarded her by President Thabo Mbeki in 2002 for her achievments in art.
