Women in Photography
Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America

Women In Photography International (www.womeninphotography.org) Celebrates it's 25th Anniversary with a juried black & white print collection Call for Entries. Founded in 1981, by a group of professional photographers living in Los Angeles, Women In Photography International (WIPI) has progressed over the years to become one of the most recognized organizations for women photographers worldwide. WIPI celebrates turning twenty-five in 2006 by announcing "Turning Silver” - a call for entries to create a very special collection of one hundred twenty-five black and white photographic prints.

"Turning Silver" entries will be juried by an accomplished panel of professionals that will include: art directors, curators, editors, gallery owners, photo educators, photographers and publishers. The 100 juried images and artist statements will be showcased along with 25 invitational images from WIPI's Distinguished Photographers, Founders, Presidents and Directors at www.womeninphotography.org. The prints will become a permanent part of the Women In Photography International archive, Turning Silver .... into gold!

For this Silver Anniversary competition, WIPI welcomes black & white based, images only. Fiber based, resin (RC), alternative process, including toned and hand painted, color transferred to b/w, digital manipulation, with varying styles and techniques, that incorporate traditional and non traditional printing processes, shot with any type of camera, digital, professional, single use, Polaroid, toy cameras, holgas, etc no date restriction..

“This is a significant time frame in history for women photographers," according to WIPI President, Photo Artist Jean Ferro: 'In 1981, we were a grassroots organization, serving women photographers in Southern California. In 2006, we are a worldwide network, serving women working in the photographic arts by showcasing their work, and diversity to an international audience."

The original Women In Photography, Inc. was founded by creative women who recognized the value of networking and sharing, in both their work and their lives. Kicking off the 21st Century, WIPI moved onto the information super highway to provide broader visibility for its photographers with an international membership that includes some of the world's finest. As an online resource center, the organization continued to honor and serve as well as support the ever-changing needs of the women, the industry and the changes in technology.

According to former WIPI Director, Nancy Clendaniel: "WIPI continues it's 25 year legacy as a resouce for women photographers worldwide, by presenting an opportunity to share their visions and voices, by putting together this black & white print collection."

Along with the organization's educational and online outreach efforts, WIPI continues to honor women photographers worldwide through our annual Distinguished Photographer's Award. Begun in 1985 as a tribute to photographers of excellence & achievement, this award recently paid homage to photographers Annie Leibovitz (2003) and Sylvia Plachy (2004) at the Lucie Awards, in NYC. 2005 Distinguished Photographer's Award honored one of WIP's founding members, photographer Carrie Mae Weems. Former recipients include: Eve Arnold, Linda McCartney, Marion Post Wolcott, Ruth Orkin, Mary Ellen Mark, Grace Robertson, Judy Dater, Ruth Bernhard, Bereniece Abbott and Joyce Tenneson.
