"Call for Artists: Festimage - International Image Festival"

Festimage - International Image Festival is currently happening via the site www.festimage.org, and by 15 May, photographers and authors of still digital art may enter their works, regardless of their nationality. Festimage is promoted by the City Council of Chaves, Portugal, with registration free of charge and with 9.750,00 euros in prizes, including one of 5.000,00 euros for the top work.

Chaves, a city located in northern Portugal, this year will be organizing the first Festimage – International Image Festival, an event that is expected to receive and put on display digital photographs and works of art from all over the world. Festimage will be disclosed via its site at www.festimage.org, where interested artists can register, free of charge, by 15 May 2006, and where their works will be kept on display.

Through this same site, the public will be able to vote on the works so as to select the finalists, and those works shall then be classified by an international jury. Those works that are accepted, on top of the exposure they will have on the website of Festimage, will also be on multimedia display in the most crowded streets and squares of the city of Chaves, on summer nights. The 50 works garnering the most votes from the public shall be printed on photo paper and put on display in the hall of the Chaves Cultural Center.

Some of these works will be enlarged to bigger formats and posted at various locations in the city’s historical center, where they will remain on display until the end of the summer. The City Council of Chaves, which is promoting the event, has decided to award 9.750,00 euros in prizes to the five works garnering the most votes from the jury. The top vote-getter will receive 5.000,00 euros.

João Batista, mayor of Chaves, is convinced that, because this initiative is of an “entertaining and cultural” nature, and with the city making full use of “current communication technologies and the way these so easily overcome borders and include all of us in the same global ‘network,’”, Chaves will certainly “contribute toward bringing about the convergence of various peoples, cultures and civilizations.”

João Batista also feels that Festimage will even make his city and country known abroad.
