"Crossings and Monuments Too: Deborah Bell"

At Joao Ferreira Fine Art in Cape Town from May 3 to 27, 2006, Deborah Bell presents an exhibition of mixed media drawings, which evokes notions of shadowy imagery from a collective consciousness of humanity's distant past. The works are a natural extension of her recent "Sentinels", "Unearthed" and "Displacements" series, drawing on the heritage of ancient civilizations, but creating from them an evolving invented legend of our passage through history.
Her figures deal with the cycles of birth, life, death and rebirth. She refers to her work as "silent images of different cultures and times that speak to me of an alternative history; and a spiritual language that we have lost; that haunt me - I see my figures as resurrections of ideas that we have forgotten".
Born and raised in Johannesburg, Deborah Bell graduated from the University of the Witswatersrand with an M.A. in Fine Arts, and has had a distinguished career as painter, ceramicist, sculptor and printmaker. Her works can be found in many museum and institutional collections around South Africa as well as abroad.
