Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography is a non-profit, artist-run centre committed to the advancement of contemporary Canadian photography. We support the work of artists by: programming exhibitions, producing publications, offering an education program for adults and young people, maintaining a resource centre, and providing production facilities for members and community groups. The Exhibition Coordinator (EC) works on behalf of the members of Gallery 44, through the Exhibition Selection Committee, to develop and administer Gallery 44’s exhibition program. The EC's main responsibilities are to oversee two exhibition spaces, the Main Gallery and Vitrines, and coordinate the publishing program, which includes exhibition brochures and artist catalogues. The EC also coordinates other exhibition-related programs which include artist talks, panel discussions, exhibition tours, etc.
Responsibilities:
Programs: In consultation with the Exhibition Selection Committee and the Director, the EC develops and implements all exhibition related programming. The EC coordinates exhibitions and occasionally gives public talks and walking tours of the exhibitions. The EC occasionally curates and/or writes about exhibitions, with the support of the Exhibition Selection Committee.
Promotion: The EC assists in the promotion of the Exhibition program, implementing marketing plans, producing press materials and overseeing the production of promotional materials.
Administration: The EC coordinates calls for submissions reviews, assists with grant-writing by preparing information specific to exhibition programs, liaises with artists, prepares artist contracts, coordinates shipping and oversees exhibition installation.
General Office: Assists in day-to-day office duties such as answering telephone and walk-in inquiries, talks to student groups, reviews budgets associated with exhibition programming, assists with mailings, attends staff meetings, etc.
Requirements:
- Strong background in Contemporary Canadian Photography (preferably a BFA or MFA in photography)
- Experience in writing and editing.
- Strong administrative skills.
- Excellent English language oral and written communication skills
- Excellent inter-personal skills
- Ability to work collectively and independently
- Mac-based computer skills including knowledge of MS Word, Photoshop, and In-Design.
Assets:
o Second language, particularly French.
o Publishing Experience.
o Program development and promotion experience
o Experience with artist-run centres
o Personal artistic practice
Duration: Full-time position beginning at the third week of August, 2006.
Hours: The job entails working 32 hours per week with some evening and weekends.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
