UICA will host the Fiber Arts Network annual group juried exhibition featuring works from regional fibers artists, and juried by internationally recognized fiber artist, Cynthia Shira. The field of contemporary fiber art, which is one of energetic inquiry and experimentation, benefits from a growing interest today. Current textile art is wide ranging, from hand produced to digitally manipulated, exploring many conceptual avenues.
The Fiber Arts Network, a Michigan-based non-profit organization founded in 2003 to promote fiber arts in Michigan and the surrounding region, will sponsor a juried exhibition showcasing the richness and diversity of contemporary fiber art from the Great Lakes region. A broad range of two-dimensional, sculptural, mixed media, and installation art will be displayed.
Cynthia Shira, juror of the project, is an internationally recognized fiber artist living in upstate NY after many years of leading the fiber program at the University of Kansas. Recipient of two national Endowment for the Arts Craftman’s awards, she more recently was awarded a gold medal by the American Craft Council in recognition of her contributions to the field. Her weavings, using the computer to generate imagery, are in major collections in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, and the Chicago Art Institute. More than 40 artists from New York, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Michigan will be on display.
