".el daba. A Painting Exhibition by Mohamed El Sharkawy"
2006-06-11 until 2006-07-05
Townhouse Gallery / Factory Space
Cairo, , EG Egypt

Mohamed El Sharkawy was born in Qena, Upper Egypt in 1982. Sharkawy began painting four years ago while assisting in a workshop at the Townhouse Gallery lead by artists Huda Lutfi and Yasser Gerab. His exposure to a variety of artists’ styles and approaches led him eventually to develop his own visual vocabulary, working independently first from home and later in a studio space he acquired on the gallerys third floor.

el daba refers loosely to any four-legged beast. Sharkawy’s boldly colored paintings are inhabited by all manner of animals drawn from his personal memories of Upper Egypt and his sense of their centrality in everyday life in this region. The animals appear as abstracted figures of original, more precisely defined creatures whose specificity but not power of presence have disappeared.

Sharkawy currently resides in Cairo where he is an instructor in the Townhouse’s Friday Workshops programme for working children.
