Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is seeking a part-time employee for the new position of Public Programs Manager. Founded in 1999 and based in Toronto, Prefix is a registered charitable organization that fosters the appreciation and understanding of contemporary photo, media and digital art. Internationally recognized for the publication of Prefix Photo magazine, the organization also mounts exhibitions in its visual, audio and surround art galleries, circulates travelling shows, maintains a public reference library, publishes books, and presents a broad range of public programs, including an annual speakers series. With its recently renovated facility in the heart of Toronto's arts community at 401 Richmond West, Prefix provides its staff with the opportunity to participate in an exciting, growing organization in a dynamic arts environment.

The Public Programs Manager is responsible for two key aspects of the organization’s activities.  The first area consists of the administration and coordination of all public programs, such as the speaker series and reference library, and the development and implementation of related components, such as audience development and volunteer mentorship. The second area is the production management of magazine and book publishing, including processing submissions and liaising with the scanning bureau, printer and bindery. Applicants with education or experience in only one of these areas are nonetheless encouraged to apply, as Prefix will provide training to the successful candidate, as needed. The Public Programs Manager works with the Operations Manager and the Circulation Manager, and reports to the Director.

The successful candidate will possess the following attributes:
– superior planning and organizational skills
– excellent verbal and written communication skills
– computer literacy (MAC environment)
– motivated, outgoing and self-directed
– ability to work cooperatively in an open-concept office
– responsible and reliable

Additional assets include:
– education and/or experience in print production management, program development, marketing and communication, or arts administration
– knowledge of contemporary photography, media and digital arts
– fluency in French

The Public Programs Manager is a part-time employee with a one-year renewable contract. The position requires 24 hours per week, with occasional evenings and Saturdays. The starting salary is $18,000 per annum, with professional development opportunities.

Please forward your cover letter and résumé, by mail or e-mail only, addressed to the Search Committee, at Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art, 401 Richmond Street West, Suite 124, Toronto, Ontario, M5V 3A8.  E-mail: info@prefix.ca

Deadline: July 25, 2006. Start date: September 5, 2006.

Prefix thanks all applicants for applying; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
