Indepth Arts News: "Six Degrees of Separation 2: The Inner Workings of Cold Contact" 2006-07-20 until 2006-09-09 Stux Gallery New York, NY, USA United States of America
The featured artists investigate the aesthetics of cultural decay and personal loss by using
both “low-tech” methods of application, as evidenced in the “hand work” of Xenobia
Bailey, alongside works that utilize the most up-to-date technologies and special effects
productions as in the videos of Mathilde ter Heijne. Through a myriad of modalities, the
artists in this exhibition express both a personal and, in select cases, geographic sense of
loss.
Utilizing found images and sound to reference lost childhoods, some of the artists rely on
free association and humor in rendering work and reworking images that manage to be
both whimsical and monumental by utilizing elements that ultimately relate to pop
culture, fashion and pornography. Others reinvestigate the socio-political art of the
1920’s, 1940’s and current political events to empower the forgotten and marginalized
majorities of society.
Participating artists: Xenobia Bailey, Graciela Fuentes, Ann Hamilton, Scott Hug,
Anna Joelsdottir, Kosyo, Dean Monogenis, Maceo Montoya, Dennis Oppenheim,
Ester Partegas, Ted Riederer, Marc Swanson, Mathilde ter Heijne, Ike Ude, Brina
Thurston, Michael Timpson, Manabu Yamanaka
