Qin Feng’s Landscape of Civilization series (2003-2008) consists of one hundred ink books (“album leaves”), which portray the development of civilizations through the art of calligraphy. Qin’s work is grounded in pre-historic references to Mayan, Babylon, Asian, and modern civilizations, and he also invents his own pre-historic and futuristic civilizations. Despite this tendency to reach back into the past, the Chinese artist also works with contemporary mediums such as multi-media presentation (e.g., recording, sound and performance).
Born in Xinjiang, China in 1961, Qin Feng graduated from the Shandong Art Institute in 1985. Whilst establishing himself as a prominent member of the Chinese avant-garde movement, Qin worked at a number of publishing houses, research institutes and universities until he moved to Berlin in 1996, where he taught at Berlin University of Art, HDK. In 1997 he was invited by the City of Berlin to serve as Curator for the Sino-German Cultural Exchange in acknowledgement of his involvement in the Chinese avant-garde movement. From 2006 till the present he has been teaching and serving as graduate advisor at the Central Art Institute in Beijing for a few months per year while he resides in Boston.
