"Alex Calinescu at the Albers Foundation"
2006-10-06 until 2006-10-28
Sarah Myerscough Fine Art
London, , UK United Kingdom

This October the gallery is delighted to welcome Alex Calinescu to exhibit new paintings, the result of her residence at the esteemed Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut. This is an exciting and ambitious exhibition, including large-scale paintings and drawings that act as a visual diary, recording her creative response to an extraordinary life-affirming journey. The Foundation maintains residence studios for select visiting artists exemplifying the seriousness of purpose that characterised both Anni and Josef Albers. Located in 75 acres of beautiful woodland, the Albers Residency allows artists the rare opportunity to work in a concentrated way on ones art in idyllic conditions at a remove from the art world.

Indeed, the almost meditative trance induced when confronted by Calinescus works clearly reflects the influence of these removed and tranquil surroundings. Circular forms resonate off a monochrome background creating the kinetic sensation of a pulsating rhythm that compels the viewer to enter into the work, heightening ones senses through a visual experience that is all encompassing. Calinescus work has also been accredited with musical qualities and it is interesting to know that the artist herself has a strong musical background that has clearly added an extra dimension to her work. By using simple forms and working in series, Calinescu progressively develops her theme, which can be a modulation or total transition from what has gone before.

In this series Alex Calinescus work has reached a new level of purity, having progressed by stages from representation, through expression, to greater abstraction and now the pared down line.

Alex Calinescu has shown intern ationally since leaving the Royal Academy Schools in 1992 and has a major forthcoming exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest in 2007.
