New Editions Gallery, a premier contemporary art gallery in Lexington, Kentucky welcomes back Julie Schumer and James George Koskinas for a show opening October 13 and running through November 10, 2006. Schumer and Koskinas are both new Premiere Portfolio Members at absolutearts.com.
Julie Schumer will be showing new abstract paintings. Schumer’s works have been described as bold and edgy, dynamic, integrating form, line and color. While Schumer works from the classic expressionist tradition, she says, “I don’t start with any preconceived ideas. One stroke leads to the next. Many layers of color build on each other, pushing and pulling the work to completion.” The inherent rawness does not take away from the paintings’ sophistication.
James George Koskinas will show his new equine and figurative paintings. Koskinas continues his exploration of subconscious archetypes with his works. His horses show influences of Lascaux cave paintings, Rothenberg and Marini yet he has taken the images and made them his own. In his boldly colored studies of women’s faces the paintings portray a wide range of expression and emotion. These striking portraits show Koskinas’s unique and diverse expression of femininity.
