"Towards The Light: Keith Morant"
2006-11-05 until 2006-12-06
Alexis International
Christchurch, , NZ New Zealand (Aotearoa)

Following his solo exhibition at the Broadway gallery in New York, Keith Morant has returned to New Zealand to complete and exhibit a new range of work for Alexis International. This exhibition is titled ‘Towards The Light’ and the opening reception was held on Sunday 5th of November at the gallery. The pressure is on for Morant. In December he exhibits again in Miami at the Art Basel International Art show, then January 2007 sees his work on a five-month touring exhibition called ‘Apple’ which goes from Valencia, Spain, Europe and Beijing, China, then back to New York.Keith Morant has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since April 2006.

The gallery hopes to squeeze in another show of his work next year but with interest now buzzing on both east and west coasts of America and his commitment to represent New Zealand at the 2007 International Florence Biennale, things may be a bit tight.

However, as Morant’s New Zealand agents, we are proud to represent him anywhere on the planet as well as at home. We also welcome again Anatoly Zelinsky, principle viola with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. He also has just returned from New York. He graciously travelled there to give a commanding performance at the opening reception of Morant’s solo exhibition ‘Music For Manhattan.’

Morant at Alexis International - Margaret Duncan B.A.
Published in New York Arts Magazine vol 11 No 9/10 October 2006

“The seamless exchange between the image and concept in Morant’s art which springs instinctively (as it does for many artists) from an unfathomable desire to create, remains constant and independent of the medium used. The artist’s animated painterliness, gestural brushstrokes and vibrant colours infuse many of the works. The carefully orchestrated compositions include his recurrent and vigorous hieroglyphics or motifs. These appear as busy organisms that spiral upwards and outwards in explosions of pyrotechnic colour. And it is on these luxuriantly painted and expressive canvases where you feel Morant’s aesthetic temperament invoking the inventiveness of Klee and the vivid coloration of Kandinsky.

"Morant is not concerned with prevailing tastes or art world trends, his work is unique and refreshingly sincere. One of his strengths is his ability to activate a mutual consciousness between artist and viewer, sharing moments of intense visual exhilaration with moments of quiet contemplation; ensuring his position in the murkiness of this post-modern era as a leader, not a follower.”
