" Amanda van Gils: A Poetic Line"
2007-03-01 until 2007-03-24
Rex-Livingston
Surry Hills, NS, AU Australia

During March 2007, Rex-Livingston presents Amanda van Gils: A Poetic Line. The works in ‘A Poetic Line’ continue the artist’s interest in depicting figures outside of their expected settings. Occupying indistinct space and time, the figures appear in some senses dislocated from reality but are all in fact derived from real scenarios observed or experienced by the artist. he newer works extend from the pure fun and childish imagination of the work seen in ‘Playtime’ to now incorporate adulthood with all the restrictions that encompasses. Supporting structures, gleefully ignored by the children depicted, provide clues to the limitations felt by the clinging adults, dependant on more than their own imaginations. Amanda van Gils has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2004.

“Amanda van Gils seems to be at home in the twilight. Bright and dark are equally present as hope and senselessness. Here she can cautiously ask her questions about the relation of people and place, of real and imaginative, ask them with the affirmative question mark of her visible intentions while not demanding a definite answer, leaving room for individual interpretations. This is the glow of van Gils’ specific twilight that radiates from all her work.”
