"Power of the Portrait 2007"
2007-03-08 until 2007-12-31
ARTROM
Rome, , IT Italy

ARTROM Gallery is pleased to present the Winners of the POWER of the PORTRAIT 2007 International Art Competition. The desire to depict a human being with a drawing or paint is ancient, but it has lost none of its fascination. In the past, the portrait was an attempt to keep the subject “alive”, to attain some sort of immortality, and this too has not changed much. The challenge of the portrait is to go beyond a superficial representation of the subject and to delve deeper to portray the spirit or soul of a person, which is not often achieved. This requires a sensitivity to the subject that is not made any easier with the photograph nor with the advent of digital technology. First place went to Terry Payne, Second to Adam Brooks and Third to Lidia Simeonova. Lidia Simeonova has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2004.

The portrait is usually staged or posed, but entails an interpretation that looks natural and eliminates the “barrier” between the artist and subject, allowing for, at least, a glimpse of the true character to come through.

Lidia Simeonova states, "I was born and grew up in Bulgaria, where I obtained a Masters Of Fine Arts from Velico Tarnovo University of Fine Art. My free spirit, and lust for discovery and exploration fueled a worldwide journey. As I traveled the world, my style and personality matured. My artwork tells a story—my story, of the different periods in my personal and creative life.

"I spent many years as an abstract artist, but the human figure has always persisted in the creative process. Now the human expression and relationship are the leading thoughts when I take a brush or pencil.

"My artwork is a reflection of my life. I project frozen moments—good and bad—onto the canvas. I want to create work in which life and painting blend in a perfect existential poem, to present the viewer with a harmonious, contemplative image, which speaks to the spiritual complexities of our existence.
