"Scott Conarroe: Londons"
2007-06-08 until 2007-06-30
Michael Gibson Gallery
London, ON, CA Canada

During the month of June 2007, Michael Gibson Gallery in London, Ontario presents "Scott Conarroe: Londons". Known for his urban portraits of Halifax, Vancouver, and London, Scott Conarroe captures a vivid image of the places where we live, work and play through his ambient photographs. Conarroe is interested in the change of seasons and times of day when the light is most radiant. His long exposure times and abandoned / birds-eye-view perspective allows for extremely atmospheric, glowing images.

"In the fall of 2005 I began photographing London, Ontario. I produced a generalized place portrait of the city’s houses and its infrastructure and ambience. Several months later I re-photographed the same sites according to those compositions. Londons 1 is a series of reproductions of a place that is based upon another city altogether, but in the context of this project it is the definitive original template. Londons 2 is its copy. There are obvious differences in season and there is also gratification in seeing the sweep of the year in a single viewing. A subtle shift in the latter’s methodology, however, compounds the unraveling rhetorical tension between notions of authenticity and modes of duplication.

"The images of Londons 2 are all double exposures; that is two pictures were taken on each negative without moving the camera. Typically a couple of dozen minutes passes between exposures so the sky colours shift or the streetlights come on, and this is determined by my aesthetic temperament. The act of photographing this second generation city, then repeating and repeating the process again models one aspect of the metaphysical ambiguity we find ourselves living in."

Scott Conarroe

Photographs of the Thames river, Eldon House, JLC, train tracks and urban neighbourhoods will be included in the exhibition.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1974, Conarroe earned a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute (2001) and a MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (2005).
