"Visions from Voices: Artwork Inspired by Kentucky Poetry, Prose and Songwriting"
2007-07-05 until 2007-10-06
Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft
Louisville, KY, USA United States of America

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft is pleases to present Visions from Voices: Artwork Inspired by Kentucky Poetry, Prose and Songwriting, sponsored by Brown-Forman. The exhibition will feature artwork that has been inspired by Kentucky literature and will include works created by illustrators, graphic artists, designers, book binders and others. The opening reception, sponsored by Proof on Main, will be held Thursday, July 5 from 5-7:30pm and will feature readings by Bobbie Ann Mason and Richard Taylor. The exhibit will remain on display through October 6, 2007.

Kentucky has a long and rich history of prose, poetry and song-writing. Robert Penn Warren was the first Poet Laureate of the United States. William Wells Brown (1814-1884) was America's first Black novelist. A. B. Guthrie (1901-1991) was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his 1949 novel, The Way West. In more recent times, Wendell Berry, Bobbie Ann Mason, Barbara Kingsolver and Sue Grafton regularly grace the best sellers list. Using their works and words as inspiration, we have invited artists and others to express their own particular creative visions. All work in this show will have a clearly articulated literary inspiration or reference based on the work of Kentucky poets, writers or songwriters.

"This exhibition is a celebration of both visual art and literary work, two areas of rich tradition in Kentucky," says Brion Clinkingbeard, Curator and Deputy Director of KMAC. "We are excited to be featuring work by well-known visual artists, along with folks known for other sorts of work, including graphic designers and illustrators."

Participating artists include: Dobree Adams, Constance Alexander, Pat Banks, Dr. Jackie Batey, Cathy Berg, Sonja Brooks, Dan Dalton, Patrick Donley, Wayne Ferguson, Steve Finke, Gabrielle Fox, Kurt Gohde, Karen Hamner, John Haywood, Vallorie Henderson, Emily Howell, Shayne Hull, Jonathan Greene, Mary Dennis Kannapell, Susan E.
