Indepth Arts News: "Leah Wong: Acrylics and Hand-cut Paper on Canvas" 2007-10-06 until 2007-11-07 Sherrie Gallerie Columbus, OH, USA United States of America
Leah’s recent work reflects her childhood interest in Chinese paper-cuts. Her paintings reveal her memories and imaginings. She hand-colors and hand-cuts her imagined creatures and then embeds them using paint, texture, abstract forms, and gestural lines. Through her paintings, she intends to hybridize culture, conceptual space and materials, and hopes to connect viewers’ minds and imaginations.
Leah Wong states, "My work presents an allegory of the human mind and its activities. Through representations of imagined creatures, I portray a landscape of metaphorical life, emotions and dreams. I intend to make my paper-cut creatures be a theater of characters offering a glimpse of beauty and energy. My art-making activity is an ongoing search for space, and a negotiation involving Eastern and Western cultures as well as value and system.
"I am interested in investigating culture, material hybridity and decorative elements in painting. I expect my abstract-narrative expressions to provide open interpretations for viewers and to engage viewers’ imaginations. Everyday life, dreams and the social environment are the sources of my ideas but I conjure narratives spontaneously, often exploring the concept of 'play'."
