Indepth Arts News: "Ancient Journey, New Direction - New Works by Alan Falk" 2007-11-19 until 2008-01-13 Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven Woodbridge, CT, USA United States of America
These sacred texts and commentaries, informed by the core moral and humanistic values of Jewish tradition and ethos, have shaped western civilization, encompassing the fundamental desire for personal, spiritual and global peace, equality, and social justice.
The incorporation of these religious sources, exploring the universal metaphors and messages of good and evil, posing questions of integrity and moral/ethical choices, illustrating parables on mortality and the quest for spiritual connection, have been the catalyst for Falk's colorful and rich commentaries and personal meditations. They link the lessons of his heritage to contemporary concerns.
The initial themes evolve into subtexts containing childhood recollections, free-association, historical and social/political commentary. Through careful crafting of thematic and vibrant color with a mastery for expressive line, Falk has developed an allegorical and poetic language. His approach is multi-layered and intuitive, moving between the particular characteristics of the subject and his own interpretation, infusion with personal iconography, that builds towards an emotional crescendo through an intimate interaction with the work.
Born in England, Falk studied painting at Manchester College of Art & Design. Following postgraduate studies, he was awarded the prestigious Granada Fellowship in Fine Art at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Manchester Polytechnic. He taught painting and drawing at several colleges of art in England, and was represented by major London galleries and was included in numerous international exhibitions in the U.K. and Europe, before emigrating to the United States in 1974.
In the US, Falk has continued exhibiting in numerous group and museum exhibitions including National Academy of Arts & Letters, Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo; New York International Art Expo; Minnesota Museum of Art; Baltimore Museum of Art; Columbus Museum Of Art; Bradley University, Peoria; Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT. He has had solo exhibitions at major art galleries that have represented his work, including E.P Gurewitsch, AM Sachs & Katherina Rich Perlow galleries in New York City.
