"Vignette: Solo Exhibition by Clare Menck"
2007-11-27 until 2008-01-05
US Art Gallery
Stellenbosch, ML, ZA South Africa

Vignette, a solo exhibition of Paintings by Clare Menck is showing at the US Art Gallery, Stellenbosch, South Africa from 27 November 2007 until 5 January 2008. The generally intimate and small easel paintings of Clare Menck are often characterised by their autobiographic content as she uses herself and those around her as her most frequented subjects. In her latest solo show Vignette, she focuses on figures in interiors evoking the Dutch (and Northern European) tradition of interior genre painting.

The exhibition includes some striking female as well as male nudes in spaces familiar to the artist, but her popular swimmers and Karoo house-scapes will also feature.

The solo show Vignette marks Clare Menck's return to the gallery of her alma mater, a decade after the completion of her Master's degree in Fine Art at the University of Stellenbosch.

Clare Menck was born in Durban in 1969. She holds a B A Fine Art degree (cum laude) (1990) from Stellenbosch University, an Advanced Diploma in Fine Art (Painting) from the Michaelis School of Art, UCT (1991) and a M A Fine Art from the University of Stellenbosch (1996). Her extensive university career was peppered with prizes, awards and scholarships, several for postgraduate studies abroad.
