Columbus-based artist Paul Richmond recently shared his painting “Remembering Tammy Faye” with guests including Larry King, Cloris Leachman and Ron Jeremy at a memorial service hosted by Tammy Faye Messner’s longtime manager and friend Joe Spotts at his home in Palm Springs. Richmond presented the painting to Roe Messner (Tammy’s husband) and guests at the event and it was auctioned to raise money for the Tammy Faye Memorial Trust Fund which has been established to erect a monument in her honor.
Paul Richmond has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2004.
The painting debuted in October at the reception for Richmond’s exhibit “Ins and Outs: A Revival” at BoMA in Columbus, where it was unveiled by Paige Passion, an award-winning drag queen. At the memorial service in Palm Springs, Charlene Tilton (who will portray Tammy in an upcoming bio-pic) did the honors. Richmond, who attended the event with his partner Dennis Niekro, explained that he had never met Messner but admired her advocacy for the GLBTQ community. According to Messner, “I don’t label people. We’re all just people made out of the same old dirt, and God didn’t make any junk.”
Many of Richmond’s paintings, including those in his most recent exhibit, draw upon his own experiences as a young man who was raised in a conservative, Midwestern environment and struggled to come to terms with his homosexuality. When his first solo show opened in March at the Ohio Art League Gallery, he worked with board members for the Kaleidoscope Youth Center (benefiting GLBTQ youth) to plan a benefit in the gallery for their organization. His work was also auctioned at DIFFA’s Dining by Design event in May, supporting the Columbus AIDS Task Force.
“Ins and Outs: A Revival” will be on display at BoMA through December, and Richmond’s work (including “Remembering Tammy Faye”) can be viewed online at www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/p/prichmond.
