Secret Portraits
UAVM - Unknown Artists Virtual Museum -
, PT Portugal

Portraits are one of the basic forms of artistic practice.
With Secret Portraits the UAVM Museum pretends to reveal that ancient form in the digital age. Secret Portraits refers to an unknown identity, a grateful theme to the Unknown Artist. The secrecy as representation is against
individualism of the picture. In this sense the Secret Picture. It's anti-individual. In a sense it's an anti-portrait. With Secret Portraits UAVM seeks to present an digital art show around the Portrait, questioning their ways of Representation,
centered in photograph and digital video and refusing practices associated with it, such as drawing, painting or photograph. Included in the exhibition is Laura Castanedo who has been a Premiere Portfolio Artists at absolutearts.com since 2003.

Mattia Bonetti 2008 - New Work
David Gill -
London, UK United Kingdom

David Gill Galleries is delighted to announce an exhibition of new work by Mattia Bonetti at 3 Loughborough Street London SE11 5RB, 14 May to 14 June, 2008. Mattia Bonetti was one of the first artists to work with David Gill when he established his gallery in Fulham Road in 1987. Now, Bonetti is set to have a solo show at David Gill’s primary space in Loughborough Street, which opened in 1999. Ten new designs will include the Happy Birthday cabinet, a large-scale piece which, with its aluminium leaf and varnish exterior is a triumph of fine skills. A book dedicated to this piece will be published jointly by David Gill Galleries and Bernard Chaveau Editeur, Paris. Yo Yo table, another new piece from Bonetti, is made in polished aluminium, with one part seeming to float above the other. A restrained and intentionally simple piece, its beauty lies in the absolute perfection of its production. The resulting piece is quite literally flawless.

Richard Solstjarna: The Gossamer Lightness of a Gesture
Sala Barna -
Barcelona, ES Spain

Richard Solstjarna, Swedish fine artist, will have a solo exhibition entitled "The Gossamer
Lightness of a Gesture" from May 15 until June 2, 2008 at Sala Barna Gallery in Barcelona, Spain. Stig-Ake Stalnacke, International artcritic, from Sweden comments: "Richard Solstjarna fascinates me with his suite of paintings. In some of his
art I see the gesture – the rapidly sketched sign, a fleeting feeling
flashing past – captured, ethereal and beautiful, on paper. My thoughts turn
towards to ZEN Buddhism. I think of Japanese Calligraphy, that lives a world
apart from Western art. I see images that want nothing else but to capture
the gesture as a movement, as a beautiful impression of the heart's song, or
purity." Richard Solstjarna has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2004. Read Indepth Article

Marc Katano: Eurythmics - A series of large scale paintings
Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts -
New York, NY USA United States of America

Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts is pleased to present new large scale paintings by Marc Katano. We have worked with Katano for 15 years both as his publisher of monotypes and with exhibitions of his paintings. In our original publications and exhibitions Katano's signature elliptical strokes formed solid or semi- solid ovoid shapes that could be read as leaves layered in space or water. One could ascribe a narrative quality to the image. People also ascribed an Asian influence; Katano is Japanese American and even if viewers were unaware of his heritage they instantly saw the calligraphy of the East in his work.

Artblogs - Art Blogs:

BY WAY OF THE DODO: Scott Muskgrove's Menagerie
Walter King, USA
Every generation defines itself, to some extent, in rebellion to their elders'. The fine art world is so caught up in its high minded, illusory and often times silly ideals about what art should be that it often forgets that art is a petri dish for our culture. What eventually happens is that a new generation who feels the weight of history decides to throw it all off. The Impressionists sidestepped the Salon, in the 60's artists formed unions to overthrow the museums and protest the war in the 60's (the museums are still with us thankfully), and sometime in the 80's younger artists, partly because of the weight of history and partly because some simply knew nothing of history they simply ignored high art and embraced the art they grew up with. I suppose you can call it low or popular art. I use these terms somewhat facetiously here as my philosophy at least tries to ignore those labels in search of a more holistic understanding of art. More recently I've been known to rail against the democritization of art. But just so you understand the complexity of my views I am not against the next generation sidestepping the system.
