"CHINA INCIDENTAL: (Un)familiar Territories"
2008-05-24 until 2008-06-22
Chinese Arts Centre
Manchester, , UK United Kingdom

Exploring perceptions of sound and space, "CHINA INCIDENTAL: (Un)familiar Territories" is a groundbreaking project which presents a slice of contemporary China which is not seen, but heard. Hosted by Chinese Arts Centre as part of the UK's largest ever festival of Chinese culture - CHINA NOW, *(Un)familiar Territories* is a series of headphone walks by leading experimental sound artists Yan Jun and Hitlike (real name Zhang Liming) which provide a glimpse into life in China today using the evocative qualities of sound. From 24 May to 22 June 2008 visitors to Chinese Arts Centre will be able to pick up a Chinese MP3 player and a map which together will take them on a walk around Manchester city centre and an aural journey through a major Chinese city.

Sound recordings of everyday moments in a Chinese city have been carefully edited to link with locations on a half hour walk around Manchester city centre. Dislocated from their original surroundings and re-routed into the ears of listeners, the sounds of Beijing or Harbin transform the landscape of Manchester as the walkers encounter familiar territories in unfamiliar ways.

The complex sound works challenge the perception of the immediate surroundings in Manchester whilst simultaneously providing a powerful experience of China: music, conversation, traffic all stimulate imaginings of everyday moments in China. To compliment these imaginings and provide a visual context, an exhibition of photographs by Zhu Ying of the locations in Shanghai where where Yan Jun's sound recordings were made.

Yan Jun is a Beijing based sound artist and poet. A driving force of China's underground music and sound art scene, Yan uses the concept of recycling, feedback and reduction to create sound art works. He has participated in exhibitions and festivals across Mainland China and internationally.

Zhang Liming, known as Hitlike, was born in Inner Mongolia and currently lives in Northeast China. Founder of various web-based sound art groups, Hitlike describes himself as a mere listener who occasionally creates field-recording based works that are concerned with acoustical textures.

(Un)familiar Terrritories is part of *CHINA INCIDENTAL*, a newly commissioned series of soundworks which explore the experience of contemporary China through sound. Curated by artist and composer Matthias Kispert, the series presents work by China's leading experimental artists.

*CHINA NOW*, the UK's largest ever festival of Chinese culture, is a 6-month nationwide celebration of over 800 Chinese events including exhibitions, performances and activities spanning Chinese film, cuisine, comics, art, literature, music, design, science, technology, business, education and sport across the UK.
