From June 12 until July 12, 2008 M.J. Higgins presents Mark Oberli'ns work in an exhibition entitled "Out of Doors". Mark Oberlin has lived his life as an artist and is multi faceted and accomplished in many mediums. Oberlin works with oil on canvas using a process in which the paint is applied in an impressionist style, in dabs of color, and then they are blended and polished into a smooth sculpted finish. Oberlin paints with an intense attention to detail, his flowers are
touchable, fruits edible and the landscapes invite you to run through them.
Oberlin creates an emotional experience with each of his subject matters.
"In my landscape paintings, the sky, land, animals, and trees are all
deliberately placed in compositions that lead the viewer through the
painting in a rhythmic harmony. The viewer can feel the atmosphere and what
it feels to be surrounded by it, floating in it. In the paintings of the
flowers and fruit, the viewer is brought into the sensual world of scent and
taste. The fruits are voluptuous and ripe, giving references to the human
figure. The flowers are unpicked and free in their own environment. The
land where their roots are is not shown but implied. They sway softly in
the sky. The colors are saturated taking the familiar one step from reality
into a slightly different, yet soothing world. The paintings are a visual
escape where the viewer is returned gently back to the world in a calm
relaxed state."
Oberlin graduated with a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1989. He
then moved to San Francisco where he has been primarily showing since 1990.
Oberlin relocated to Los Angeles in 2007. M. J. HIGGINS is proud to
present Oberlin's first solo show in Los Angeles.
