"GALLERY MOVES TO NEW PREMISES AND OPENS WITH Between Meaning and Matter"
2008-06-25 until 2008-08-08
Bell-Roberts Art Gallery
Cape Town, , ZA South Africa

Bell-Roberts Gallery, a leading gallery for contemporary South African art, announces a move from its space on Bree Street in Cape Town’s CBD, to Fairweather House at 176 Sir Lowry Road in Woodstock. The new gallery will feature architecturally designed flexible exhibition spaces, plus new facilities for support staff, and the Bell-Roberts Publishing and design studio. There will also be a greatly expanded bookstore. The official opening is set for 25 June 2008. This new space will be launched with an exhibition entitled, Between Meaning and Matter. The exhibition will feature all new works from artists within the Bell-Roberts stable and certain invited artists. Focusing on current developments within South African art today, and founded upon a commitment to transforming traditions, Between Meaning and Matter brings together an exhibition of dynamic works which are grounded in the tension inherent in the relationship between meaning and matter.

Encompassing a cross section of experimental and traditional art practice, Between Meaning and Matter includes a pixilated mural by 2008 Mercedes-Benz South Africa Art Award winner, Kevin Brand; a two-metre (circum.) lazer-cut tondo based on inter-net generational patterns by ABSA  L’ATELIER finalist Lyndi Sales; and Lynette Bester’s sculpture encapsulating hundreds of toys collected by the Hell’s Angels.Bester is also an ABSA  L’ATELIER finalist. There are also new sharp-focus paintings by Nigel Mullins, paintings from movie-stills by Tanya Poole (joint winner Brett Kebble Art Award 2004), and a community-based performance by “alt-pop” artist Jacques Coetzer, recently completed on a residency in Scotland.  Further participants are Johann van der Schijff (winner of 2 prestigious awards at the Dakar Biennal);  Berco Wilsenach ABSA L’ATELIER winner 2005; Kudzanai Chiurai; Fahamu Pecou, Svea Josephy, Anthony Strack and Phillipe Bousquet.

Between Meaning and Matter will open on the 25th of June and run through to the 8th of August at the new Bell-Roberts Gallery at the Fair Weather House, 176 Sir Lowry Road Woodstock, and Cape Town.
