New York, NY,
The Van Gogh Museum and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York are collaborating on Van Gogh and the colours of the night. It is the first exhibition to be dedicated to Vincent van Gogh's representations of the evening and night, a theme which recurs throughout his oeuvre. Celebrated works from international collections will include The starry night (MoMA), Eugene Boch (Musee d'Orsay) and The potato eaters (Van Gogh Museum).
Van Gogh and the colours of the night is the first collaborative project between the Van Gogh Museum and MoMA and organized by Joachim Pissarro (Adjunct Curator of MoMA, Bershad Professor of Art History and Director of the Hunter College Galleries) and Sjraar van Heugten (head of Collections of the Van Gogh Museum). The exhibition will be on view from 21 September 2008 to 5 January 2009 at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and from 13 February to 7 June 2009 at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
"It often seems to me that the night is much more alive and richly coloured than the day." (Vincent van Gogh, Arles 8 September 1888)
Long before he became an artist, Van Gogh evinced a great love for the mood conjured up by evening and night, which he associated with a feeling of security and the poetic. Van Gogh and the colours of the night looks at his exploration of the different aspects of the nocturnal hours and the way in which these are interwoven with different themes such as agricultural life in relation to the cycle of nature and man's battle with modernity. Van Gogh regarded the evening and night as a time for self-reflection and creativity, particularly for looking back over the day's events. As such he loved to work during the hours of twilight and darkness, drawing from them energy and inspiration.
Van Gogh and the colours of the night will be published to accompany the exhibition. Contributors include Sjraar van Heugten, Joachim Pissarro and Chris Stolwijk. Van Gogh Museum / The Museum of Modern Art, 160 pages, 115 illustrations, in English, Dutch, French, German, Spanish and Italian. Price: € 24.95.
