"Michael Pettit: A Two Part Solo Exhibit"
2008-10-06 until 2008-10-24
AVA - Association for Visual Arts
Cape Town, , ZA South Africa

THE AVA in partnership with Spier invites you to two solo exhibitions by MICHAEL PETTIT: FIGURATIVE PAINTINGS - Part 1 of Pettit's double exhibition at the AVA, AND LYRICAL ABSTRACTS - Part 2 will be held at the Joao Ferreira Gallery. Michael Pettit will show his new paintings in a double exhibition at two Cape Town galleries in October, his figurative works at the AVA and opening two days later his lyrical abstracts at the Joao Ferreira Gallery. At the AVA, Pettit's paintings explore images and archetypes of theatre, opera, clown and magician. The characters presented are like travelling players, artists who creatively transform the absurdity, pain and brevity of life into wit, invention and transcendence. Sacred play, surreal leaps and poetic conjunctions abound.

Part 2 of Michael Pettit's double exhibition: LYRICAL ABSTRACTS will be held at the Joćo Ferreira Gallery, 8 October - 1 November 2008. An ambitiously broad range of style and content has been a hallmark of Pettit's work and these large mysterious abstracts will contrast and dialogue with the image dense paintings at the AVA.

Michael Pettit has exhibited widely over many years, receiving extensive recognition. Major public, university, and corporate collections include his distinctive paintings. His academic background provides an intellectual base to fully developed, intuitive works of art. Private collectors worldwide continue to acquire his work. Since his last solo exhibition at the AVA in 2005, Pettit has exhibited at the Art London fair in the UK.
