Indepth Arts News: "Tina Newlove: Protection" 2008-10-26 until 2008-11-29 Latcham Gallery Stouffville, ON, CA Canada
Tina Newlove’s “Protection”, a solo exhibition of new work, is largely concerned with the violations of privacy and over-protection in society and the vulnerability of the individual in both city and intimate home-life situations. Newlove has added a sub title “Red Herrings and White Rabbits” or “Oh dear! Oh dear! I Shall be too late!” or “Let the Cat Outta the Bag”. Newlove’s art is a culmination of images that surface from her subconscious, and depict relationships both intimate and distant. Newlove comments, “With the painting, stitching and assembling I have been doing for ‘Protection’, I am seeking to nail down the past." The artist continues, "The antique photo albums, filled with paintings and poetry and musings, are like diaries where I can record feelings and memories – a daily meditation. The works wrestle with the need to express and explore my subconscious as well as with the desire to hide those same things - to confess and clear the air or to lock them away.
"I’ve been searching, finding and protecting. I cradle my thoughts in little hideaways or secret drawers, in history and poetry.
"The violations of privacy and over-protection in society are of concern to me. In the larger works, I continue to explore the vulnerability of the individual in both city and intimate home-life situations.
"This exhibition contains secrets, protests and declarations.”
Newlove graduated from McMaster University in the Honours Fine Arts program in 1996. As a professional artist, Tina has been recognized as an artist with vision and an exceptional talent. Her creativity and techniques have brought accolades from curators and jurors who have recognized her potential to make a significant contribution to the cultural life of Canada. Since 1993, Tina’s paintings have been accepted into over seventy juried exhibitions both nationally and internationally where they have received awards at many of these shows. Tina’s humanitarian spirit combined with outstanding talent and creativity continue to further establish her as a professional, Canadian artist of merit.
Newlove has taken her art a step beyond the “stay in the studio and paint alone” approach by touring with musicians and DJ’s and producing a painting on stage that is a record and a direct expression of the music. On tour with Tribe of One Productions, Newlove has journeyed as far away as Kosovo in coalition with benefit and humanitarian efforts such as WARCHILD and UNICEF.
