The traveling exhibition of the Midwest Paint Group titled “Works from Perception” opens on February 6 at the Sheldon Swope Museum of Art in Terra Haute, Indiana where it will run through March 14. This visually intelligent and emotive exhibit features close to 50 works in small to large dimensions done in oil, acrylic, pastel and mixed media. The Midwest Paint Group, (MPG), is comprised of 10 mid-career artists originally from the Midwest region. The painters are Bob Brock, Glen Cebulash, William Foust, Philip Hale, Timothy King, Barbara Lea, Jeremy Long, Michael Neary, Ron Weaver, and Megan Williamson. Both Philip Hale and Timothy King are Premiere Portfolio Artists at absolutearts.com.
With widely varied styles, these painters are brought together by a joint commitment to working from observation while at the same time adhering to strong emotive and expressive abstract principles. Encompassing landscape, still life, and portraiture all works combine the complex beauty of the observed world with a strong grounding in abstract plasticity.
The work of MPG can be characterized as being part of the “Post Abstract Figuration” movement. An attractive 28 page full color catalogue accompanies the exhibition. Walter King writes in the catalogue essay, "Abstraction is the tension holding this group together while figuration informs and directs their energy." King is a painter who writes an art blog on absolutearts.com.
The Swope Museum opening reception is on Friday, February 6, 2009 from 6-9 p.m., with an artists' discussion at 7:30. Learn more on Wednesday, February 11 from 12:10- 1p.m. with Terre Haute artist and MPG member, Mike Neary. The Illinois portion of the exhibition is sponsored by Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
