Anna Wilkinson, Director of Northern Print: “We’re thrilled that the Northern Print Biennale is happ ening – almost every artist you can think of makes prints at some point in their career and it’s important that this is recognised and celebrated. This will be a serious opportunity to see what’s happening in contemporary printmaking in the UK and beyond.”

The Northern Print Biennale 2009 forms part of NewcastleGateshead’s world-class programme of festivals and events, managed by culture10.

Stella Hall, creative director of culture10, said: “The Northern Print Biennale is the most significant UK project focusing on printmaking for two decades. The fact it is taking place in NewcastleGateshead underlines its place at the forefront of printmaking, particularly through the work of Northern Print.

“The Biennale will offer a rare opportunity for artists to challenge and broaden the boundaries and scope of print making. It will also help to raise the profile of print making nationally and position NewcastleGateshead as a ‘Print City’ through an exciting series of events and exhibitions. I would encourage artists to consider these awards as an unrivalled opportunity to bring their work to a wider audience.”

Gill Saunders, Senior Print Curator at the V&A: “The Newcastle Print Biennale is a long-overdue opportunity to showcase and celebrate the energy, innovation and skill evident in much contemporary print-making. As a print curator with a particular interest in work which pushes the boundaries of what 'print' is and can be, I am delighted to be one of the selectors for the inaugural exhibition.”
