"Recent Works by Sam Scott"
2009-05-30 until 2009-06-20
HCG Gallery
Dallas, TX, USA United States of America

HCG Gallery in Dallas from May 30 through June 20, 2009, showcases recent works by Sam Scott in an exhibition that looks into three series of work, 2003 through 2009. Chicago born artist, Sam Scott, realized his life’s work at an early age. As a child he attended the Chicago Art Institute, and by the time he was twenty three, had journeyed to Florence, Italy to paint professionally, and secured his first one-person show in Rome.

A keen observer of life and philosophy, and a student of the planet, Sam Scott spent time during his young adult years living in various eco-systems. His twenties saw him co-habiting with the Oglala Sioux in South Dakota, working as a commercial fisherman in Alaska, and serving as artist on a classified mission to the Amazonian jungle for the Department of Energy and the State Department. All the while still managing to earn a full scholarship to the Maryland Institute of Art where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.

In 1969, Sam Scott moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, the place he has considered home since then, save five years in which he taught at the University of Arizona. His early years in Santa Fe brought about the onset of recognition of his art on a grand scale. He was awarded the first one-person show ever given to a living artist by the New Mexico Fine Arts Museum in the early seventies. That honor lead to many other commendations in subsequent years, not only in his home state, but nationally. Sam Scott’s work has been exhibited at the Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C. , the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Musée-Promenade de Saint- Benoit in Digne-Les-Bains, France, as well as in many other collections around the globe.

Sam Scott credits nature as his primary educator, although he studied under teachers including Clyfford Still, Philip Guston, David Hare, Grace Hartigan, Salvatore Scarpitta, Gerome Kamrowski, Joseph Goto, Nathan Olivera and Zubel Kachodoorian. Scott has always striven to take the knowledge gained from those artists coupled with the general feeling of abstract expressionism and add to these his self-proclaimed “consciousness of the natural world’s beauty and creative energy”. With a focus on the earth as an alive, ever changing and yet timeless subject matter, Scott creates abstract paintings in oils and watercolor that are designed, in his eyes, to tell the story of “ brave beauty” that is “slowly revealed, gradually understood, and then enduringly felt.”
