In today's world, convulsed by profound social, economic, cultural or religious inequalities ... Art becomes a homogenizing, unifying and pacifying element working as a link of concepts diametrically opposite. It always appears direct and sincere without prejudices of any kind, communicating with our spirit beyond materialistic considerations. Art is essence itself, and everyone has the right to enjoy it. The artists are the carriers of this audacious grandeur. They, in a risky way, show us a part of themselves, they open their heart to us, so that we express our opinion and criticize about their creations, without taking into account at times that we will be giving opinions - and perhaps trivializing ñ about intimate questions that reflect profound spiritual and metaphysical states that the creator decides to reveal with courage, and as such must be respected, applauded and supported. Therein resides the true audacity of the artists and their real communicative power.
It is a fact, that in recent decades, the world of art has undergone a profound revolution due to the emergence of new techniques and new materials that have resulted in new trends, new concepts and new ways to communicate that inner state. New disciplines have joined the already traditional (painting, sculpture and architecture), becoming new vehicles of expression. Highlighting the digital art, video art, artistic performances, installations, urban art and, above them all, photography, which despite having more than a century of history, has revived strongly supported in these new technologies.
Specifically, the new exhibition presented in Hotel Estela Barcelona - Art Hotel in Sitges, offers an approach to the world of photography through the work of two photographers with different concerns and motivations: Carmelo Palomero and Fernando Alonso.
The exhibition emphasizes the above differences of today's world. Under the title "Two lenses focusing on two worlds: India and New York", Palomero and Alonso give us their particular vision of two realities and two ways of looking at life completely juxtaposed.
Carmelo Palomero shows the harshness of life in India, however, this harsh reality is portrayed by his lens reflecting the gentleness of its people through their faces and their eyes. Palomero proposes a documentalist look on the social reality of India, but on a humanistic perspective, in which the protagonists are the country's inhabitants. These are pictures with the ability to make the observer vibrate, demonstrating happiness through the austerity seen in the eyes of its protagonists. After viewing the works, one has the idea that happiness is achieved through total internal peace and to our neighbour, even in the worst adversity. The sample provided is the result of many years of travel all over the world, portraying the humanity of the world, through its inhabitants, but, mainly, is the product of the concern Palomero and the avidity of his lens.
Fernando Alonso moves to the opposite pole: The Mecca of the most exacerbated capitalism, New York. In this case, the artist suggests an artistic vision of the "Big Apple". Alonso is not intended to portray the New York society, at least not consciously, his artistic vocation takes him to show images that only his expert eye detects as considered to be art. Alonso, certainly, manages to transmit the facility to see art where no-one else would have noticed it. His work is supported by this notion that photography is instantaneous. His photographs reflect those brief seconds when a situation exists, to quit in the next instant. Furthermore, demonstrating solid plastics knowledge, he captures that fleeting moment, to perpetuate it with his lens and to raise it to the level of art. Actually, his eye is able to see what doesnít really exist, and above all to communicate it and to facilitate the immersion of the observer in his ephemeral artistic world.
This exhibition will be opening at the Iris Gallery of the artistic hotel in Port d'Aiguadola on Friday May 22nd 2009 at 20:00 h and will last until the end of June. The opening will be attended by the two creators, who will share with us this evening, whose climax will be the dinner at the Restaurant proposed by the Department of Food and Beverage of the Art Hotel, led by the chef Jaume Rius.
