"Carlos Lizariturry : Sculpture"
2009-08-01 until 2009-08-29
Michael Dunev Art Projects
Torroella de Montgri, , ES Spain

During the month of August, Michael Dunev Art Projects will present a selection of sculptures in iron, stone and terra cotta by Carlos Lizariturry, the Basque-born sculptor living and working in Croatia. Born in San Sebastian in 1955, Carlos Lizariturry studied with Anthony Caro at St Martins School of Art, now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Heir to a long tradition of Basque sculptors, Lizariturry is considered the last representative of a line that includes such masters as Oteiza, Mendiburu, Besterretxea, but above all, Eduardo Chillida, for whom he worked for twelve years as personal assistant and with whom he created a large number of works, especially in granite. This experience, and his great capacity to work in hard materials, principally iron and stone, has served Lizariturry as a point of departure in his investigations on the material, volume and space.

His work is characterised by its potent muscularity and a keen sensitivity to the materials, both in iron as in stone or terra-cotta. With traces that are vaguely anthropomorphic and emitting a unique heroic presence, they recall stellae or menhirs. They are works of a surprising simplicity, from which everything unnecessary or superfluous has been removed, leaving behind only a distillation of the basic, the essential.

The sculpture of Carlos Lizariturry can be found in numerous public and institutional collections, mainly in Japan, South America and Spain, especially in the Basque Country. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in European and Latinamerican galleries and in the principal art fairs such as Art Basel, FIAC Paris, Art Cologne and ARCO Madrid. Recently his work Guardián, weighing nearly five tonnes, was acquired for the collection of Banco Banesto in Madrid and in 1996 he participated in the Tribute Exhibition to Chillida organized by the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
